What's a pound?

I know what a pound is, it's a cake

I love cake

I love food

What?

a pound isn't a cake?

I know, a pound is money

"Across the pond", they use pounds to buy things

Having money to buy things is good

I like having things like food, and a bed

I really like my bed

What?

A pound isn't money either?

A pound isn't something I can eat, and it's not money

Then what is it?

AT PET LOVE IN THE BEVERLY CENTER, a black-haired young woman holds a Pomeranian puppy. "He's so cute," she says to a young salesclerk. The fluffy orange puppy's cellmates are stacked in more than a dozen glass boxes occupying a wall — lively Dalmatians, baby German shepherds with oversize paws, spindly little Chihuahuas. Pomeranians are advertised for $700, French bulldogs for $1,000.

"If you want, I can talk to my boss about getting the price down," the clerk says. The young woman ponders the puppy in her arms. Asked if she'd ever consider adopting a dog from the pound, she responds, "What's the pound?"

See, this person doesn't know what a pound is either

My Person reminds me that I came from a pound

That's not true, I came from a store, someone bought me

They must've paid a lot of money for me, if little dogs go for so much money

My Person doubts that to be true

and reminds me that my previous people dumped me at the pound

because they "didn't have time" for me

Why did they take me home if they didn't have time for me?

I don't take a lot of time

Feed me, walk me, and potty me

how hard can this be?

My Person says there are many animals at the pound

and other pounds

I don't understand why someone would have taken me to the pound

My Person says that animals are at the pound for a lot of reasons

no time, new baby, moving, landlord, don't match the decor, shed too much, bark too much, potty in the house - all kinds of reasons

Angel came from the pound too

her Person died

that's even sadder

My Person tells me that most of the animals in the house came from the pound

But I must be the best because I came from a store first?

No, says My Person

How can that be?

Someone paid a lot of money for me

How can I not be better?

My Person says that doesn't matter, price and being bought in a store are not important

that many store dogs end up in the pound

and many purebred dogs like me end up in the pound

dogs are dogs, it doesn't matter where they come from

just where they end up

that they find their forever home

I bet lots of dogs find their forever home

just like Angel and I did

My Person says that many do

but many don't

and that's sad

I don't understand why people would buy an animal from a store when there are animals waiting for their forever homes at the pound

My Person says that life is complicated and people don't always make good choices

This all makes me confused

I think I like the pound that I can eat better

To further confuse the issue, it has become very hard to get a pet from the pound. My Pikadate Snarf was brought from a breeder. His human first went to the pound looking for a pet. She was told she would not a suitable mom for an animal because her husband, once before they were married, had a dog that was not nuetered. So since they couldn't get a pet at the POUND, they had to go to the STORE.
